In chemical plants, 55-gallon drums are widely used for liquid raw materials and additives. Moving these drums by hand or pallet jack can be slow, tiring and risky, especially when the drums are heavy or contain hazardous materials. WOLIFT developed a customized non-powered drum gripper that uses a purely mechanical self-weight clamping design, helping the customer lift and transfer standard drums without electricity, compressed air or complex wiring.

The challenge: safer drum handling in chemical plants

In chemical production, standard drums are often moved between storage, batching and production areas. Traditional handling with pallet jacks or manual assistance can be labor-intensive and inefficient, and drums may tilt, swing or spill during movement. Powered drum grippers can solve part of the lifting problem, but they also introduce new concerns. Electric or pneumatic systems require cables, air hoses and external energy sources. In chemical environments where flammable or explosive materials may be present, reducing electrical and pneumatic components around the load can be an important safety consideration.

The solution: customized mechanical drum gripper

WOLIFT developed a customized 55-gallon non-powered drum gripper for the customer's chemical plant. The gripper can be hooked onto available lifting equipment such as an overhead crane, jib crane or forklift attachment, then lowered onto the drum rim for pickup. The solution follows the same practical engineering approach used in WOLIFT custom lifting and handling solutions: match the device to the real container, workshop environment and safety requirement instead of forcing a standard tool into the application.

Self-weight clamping with no external energy

The gripper works through a mechanical linkage structure. It does not require electricity, compressed air or electronic control components. When the drum is lifted, the drum's own weight is converted into clamping force through the linkage mechanism. This means the heavier the loaded drum, the stronger the clamping action becomes. For the chemical plant, the non-powered design also removes the need for additional piping and cabling, making the device easier to use with lifting equipment already available on site.

Floor-release safety mechanism

Safety was the main focus of this project. The WOLIFT drum gripper is designed so the locking mechanism releases only when the drum is fully lowered and its weight is relieved on the ground. While the drum is suspended, the gripper remains clamped even if the drum swings or the operator makes a positioning error. This helps prevent accidental release during overhead transfer and reduces the risk of leakage, product loss, environmental contamination or operator injury.

Durable design for standard drum types

The gripper is designed for industrial 55-gallon drums, including common steel drums and PE plastic drums. The gripping stroke and dimensions are matched to standard drum rims, allowing quick engagement after alignment without repeated adjustment. The structure uses galvanized anti-corrosion treatment for chemical plant conditions. Because there are no motors, cylinders or vulnerable powered components on the gripper, routine maintenance is simple and mainly focused on periodic mechanical inspection.

The result: simpler and safer drum transfer

After the non-powered drum gripper was put into use, drum handling became faster and easier for the customer. Lifting operations that previously required two workers could be completed by one operator with suitable lifting equipment. The purely mechanical design also helped reduce risks related to powered lifting attachments. For chemical raw material handling, the customer gained a low-maintenance solution that is simple to operate, resistant to harsh plant conditions and focused on safe drum transfer.
