A refrigerated truck body manufacturer needed a safer way to lift, flip and position large insulated sandwich panels during body assembly. The challenge: lifting and standing up heavy insulated panels
The customer manufactures refrigerated truck bodies. The walls, floor and roof of the insulated body are built from large sandwich panels that must be lifted from storage, moved to the assembly area and positioned accurately against the body frame. The most difficult step was turning a panel from horizontal to vertical. With a panel weighing up to 1,200 kg, this process was risky when handled by slings, hooks and several workers pulling by hand. WOLIFT supplied a 90-degree tilting vacuum lifter rated for 1,200 kg. Instead of lifting from the panel edge with hooks or straps, the equipment grips the panel surface with vacuum suction cups and rotates the load by electric tilting. The operator picks up the panel from a horizontal stack, lifts it clear, then tilts it into the vertical position at the touch of a button. The movement is controlled and repeatable, so the panel can be presented to the truck body frame with less swinging and less manual force.
Independent suction cup control for reinforced panels
The lifter uses multiple 300 mm suction cups. Each cup is rated to carry 100 kg at a 4x safety factor, giving the complete configuration a comfortable margin above the real working load. A key feature for this customer was independent suction cup control. Refrigerated truck panels are not flat everywhere; frames, ribs and reinforcement zones can prevent a suction cup from sealing correctly. With individual cup switching, the operator can turn off cups positioned over structural areas and keep the remaining cups sealed on clean, flat surfaces.The operator no longer has to fight the most dangerous step by hand: the 90° flip is handled by the machine with controlled electric movement.
Safety margin and pressure holding
Because the equipment handles panels up to 1,200 kg, safety was central to the design. The suction cup configuration uses a 4x safety factor, so the lifter works within a conservative load range during daily operation. The system also includes a pressure-holding function. If power is lost or a fault occurs during operation, the vacuum system can keep holding the panel for up to 30 minutes.
